Hello 2012. I realize that it is towards the end of January,so I may be a bit late to the party, but regardless, Happy New Year to you. Itis the first month of 2012, so perhaps Iam just fashionably late towelcoming what lies ahead.

I really love this time of year. I love the clean slate andthe grand idea of possibility. I cravethe feeling I have at the dawn of January. Year after year. Some of you may knowthat the intention behind starting this blog was to hold me accountable. Ithelps me take responsibility for my mistakes, as well as noticing myachievements. When I look back, I sometimes cringe, while at other times, Ifeel grateful for a memory or an experience. I try to embrace thosecringeworthy moments, because from that is where growth stems.

The morning of New Year’s Eve, with my first cup of coffeein hand, I sat down to write my resolutions. A Resolution. A promise. Aresolve. An intent. A commitment. In the spirit of honesty, 2011 was tough attimes, so my resolutions to promote change hold more weight for me thisyear. At the risk of soundingdramatic, I do feel a sea change coming on, and the duty to nurture that. I, ona personal and professional level, will be diving deep into R&D (research& development) mode, as a transition is on the horizon. Consequently, itmay be a bit quiet here on the home front, as we are hard at work at“renovations” for this particular space. I look forward to resurfacing and theopportunity to share new work and fresh ideas.

She shoots Polaroids. It’s how she remembers.

You've probably heard me speak of her before: Ann McGarry, The Polaroid Queen. I am happy and proud to announce that this royal friend has a solo show up at Albina Press here in Portland.

In her words, “the photos of Polaroid: Ann McGarry illustrate the last 15 years of my life. Polaroids are my memory, as my actual memory is spotty at best. The photo I took at 3:00 PM on the afternoon the Hollywood Hills were on fire, the day that migraine almost crushed me, beer with an old friend, the heat wave from that one fall…all catalogued and viewed as my visual diary, helping me recall time and space which seem to always elude me.”

She gives you a glimpse into her world, inviting you in with beauty, humor and wit. I love the way her photographs make me feel by conjuring up a memory, and giving meaning to the mundane. There are just a couple of more days to catch this work in person, so treat yourself to a delicious cup of coffee and get lost in some beautifully crafted photographs.

Congratulations to Amy + Teddy on their marriage! You may recognize these two (in this very spot) from their engagement shoot. It was fun to return for some portraits, except this time, with Amy and Teddy as husband and wife. They had an intimate wedding celebration in the charming neighborhood of Sellwood amongst family and close friends. During the last few days of November, Kendra, Brett andmyself met in Laurelhurst Park for some wedding portraits. I love when couplestake the time after the wedding for a few photos. The day of can be such awhirlwind, and having a session afterward encourages a little reminiscing, anair of calm, and allows the couple to simply enjoy each other’s company. Plus,you have the chance to don your most dapper attire once again. It was adelightfully mellow yellow morning.The leaves were clinging,and peeking in and out of the clouds, we still had that autumn sun.

hello again.

i recently returned home from photographing a wedding in florida.

while i am always thankful for my days, i feel a renewed sense of gratitude.

i'm thankful i had the opportunity to travel, and travel for love.

and document that celebration alongside someone i respect as artist and friend.

and luckily, have the chance to visit family, who live just too far away.

but thankfully, a remedy for that heartbreaking distance is in the works.

and i feel lucky to breathe in the salty air,

and step back to embrace a view of the sea, which never fails to put it all in perspective.

shimtokk: gift wrap challenge

I recently had the pleasure of working with the lovely and talented ladies of SHIMTOKK, a collaboration between Sally J Shim of SHIM + SONS and Joke Vande Gaer of TOKKETOK. Martha Stewart’s The Crafts Dept. invited them to participate in a Gift Wrap Challenge, just in time for the holidays. Inspired by texture and simple materials, they decided to create delightful stitched packages for the challenge. It was such a pleasure to photograph their thoughtful designs, and I absolutely love their minimalist aesthetic, attention to detail, and unique, strong vision. Congratulations to Jena + Zach on their engagement! We enjoyed the changing leaves in Moulton Falls Park in Washington, and then headed out to a family farm for the rest of the shoot. We were having such a great time that nightfall snuck up on us rather quickly, but we didn’t mind. Jena + Zach, thank you for a great day & night. I had an absolute blast, and sweet Lou stole my heart (as did the horses). After seeing you two together, I know your future is filled with lots of laughter, love, kindness and friendship.

Hello November. My parents always warned me that this would happen. That time is finite, and it swiftly escapes you. They told me that as I get older, it moves at an even quicker pace. I’m sure I write with some naiveté on the subject, as I still have some years ahead of me, but every day, I grow more aware of time’s fleeting nature.

In my personal work, I am constantly drawn to photograph something that makes me slow down, giving my eyes (and myself) time to adjust. I find myself leaning more and more in that direction – unabashedly embracing beauty, simple pleasures, and appreciating small moments of peace, silence and comforting solitude.

Reminiscent for a drop of summer, I wanted to share these photographs with you. Finding them (and also sharing them) is all part of my winter project list. As some of you know, I am really looking forward to hibernating and creating, finding beauty in and making the most of those possibly dreary, dark days. These photographs are from a quiet weekend away with dear friends, where the time was spent enjoying morning and afternoon walks, making simple, home cooked meals together, and laughing and chatting over coffee or wine. I wish every weekend could be like that.

In the last twelve months, 16,327 visitors have made their way through the doors of Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center to participate in performances, events and exhibitions. On Saturday, November 12 beginning at 7PM, we’re looking for 300 more as Disjecta unveils the newest works for sale at Portland’s most exciting art auction. The event, Disjecta’s only annual fundraiser, will include a silent auction, a live auction led by MC extraordinaire AC Dickson, music, a hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres. Money raised at the event will go toward funding Disjecta’s contemporary art programming.
Disjecta is grateful to the 54 artists who have contributed pieces in support our mission and vision this year. In addition to the amazing works from the artists above, a signed and numbered series of prints by artist Peter Halley—who will be showing at Disjecta in January 2012 as part of the Curator-in-Residence program (see below)—will be available for purchase at the auction.*
Guests at the auction can expect delicious libations provided by House Spirits, Deschutes Brewery, and drinking vinegars by Pok Pok Som. Tasty treats have been generously donated by Firehouse, Olympic Provisions and Vibrant Table. Additional donations have been graciously provided by Framing Resource, Interstate Special Events, Letterpress PDX, Plus Visuals, and Sign Wizards.

Yes, I just said smize. Thankful to have these amazing ladies as friends.

Congratulations to Laura + Devon on their marriage! You may recognize these two from our day in winter wonderland together. They tied the knot at the beautiful Adrianna Ballroom in downtown Portland, and it was evident from their friends and family, that these two are LOVED. This group was full of warmth, infectious laughter, love, and legendary stories to be remembered and shared. Oh, and let’s not forget the killer dance moves. They know how to celebrate, and I believe that second to last photo is a sure sign of a good party.

Laura + Devon, thank you so much for letting me be part of your day. It was an honor (and a blast) to share it with you. Thanks for the warm welcome, and I send my congrats and very best wishes. I hope these bring you happy memories.

beating those winter blues...

Fall has definitely arrived. The light is different. The air is crisp, and the leaves are fleeting. It’s one of my favorite seasons actually. It’s cozy and inviting, and I love witnessing the transition. It also comes with a whisper that winter is not too far away. Having had a case of the winter blues in the past, I wanted to approach this year differently so I came up with a list of winter projects that I can’t wait to start. Among those is a personal pledge I’ve made for 2012 - to get the images off of the computer and made into actual prints, to enjoy as is, in frames or in handmade books. A photograph is meant to be viewed and enjoyed, and being lost in a sea of digital negatives on my computer defeats that purpose. I wholeheartedly believe in the tangible print.

For a friends’ wedding, I gave them this photograph from their engagement shoot on a wood panel as a gift. It’s done by a local company called Plywerk, that understands and supports artists and fellow creatives. It’s an alternative framing method that is beautiful and unique, and the fact that they are eco-conscious in their business practices is an added bonus. I wanted to share it with you because not only is it something I offer in addition to my portrait and wedding packages, but I have more of these in mind as part of the winter plan. For the very first time in my few years of living in Portland, instead of dreading Old Man Winter, I am really looking forward to it. The idea of hibernating and creating sounds pretty good to me. My heartfelt congratulations to Angie + John! You may recognize these two from this shoot. They had asweet ceremony amongst their closest friends and family with the Oregon coastas their backdrop. It was a fun adventure, climbing through a rocky cave to reach the perfect little hideaway. The day began with rays of sun, but in true coastal fashion, the fog rolled in just in time for our portraits. We didn't mind.

Congratulations to Kate + Johnny on their recent nuptials! Being a non-native, I am still in awe of Oregon’s landscape and this place was no exception. These two celebrated at Bridal Veil Lakes - a beautiful, lush setting with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, a peaceful lake, and a blanket of wildflowers. Where else can you take someone’s hand in marriage, and then sail away in a canoe, having a moment to take it all in with just you and your other half? I always wonder which words couples choose to share on that lake – I bet it holds many happy secrets. Add to that – close friends and family to share in your joy and festivities, and that landscape radiates. Kate + Johnny’s wedding was homegrown and heartfelt; with the help of friends, Johnny created the wooden whistles and Kate the lovely centerpieces. The song of the handmade whistles was the music during the ceremony – a perfect harmony with those rustling winds.

Kate + Johnny, it was such an honor to document your celebration. What a pleasure it was to be surrounded by your friends, family and your generous and loving spirit. Thank you for the warm welcome and for sharing the day with us. Annie and I had a wonderful time and send our best wishes your way.

Hello friends. Forgive me – as my posting has been a bit light these days. It’s hard to believe how fast time is moving, and with all my might, I keep trying to slow it down. So here I am holding on, savoring every last drop of summer. I know that the season officially extends into September, but for whatever reason, starting September 1^st, my mind shifts and I immediately welcome autumn with open arms.

So, here is the first photo of my own personal countdown to bid farewell to summer (well, my summer at least). There are nine more to follow, and for different reasons, they each bring me a good feeling about the season. Before saying goodbye, savor all the lemonade, lightning bugs, magic hour, salt & sea, sand in your feet, sun-drenched evenings, the list goes on - that you possibly can. Believe it or not, soon those leaves will start to take flight.

PS: It’s been wedding season ‘round these parts, and I have lots to share with you. Please stay tuned.

My dear friends, Quinton and Megann have three of the most beautiful, sweet and creative little girls I have ever known. One of their daughters, Jade, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Jade, at only four years old, has been so brave and courageous during her blood transfusions and chemotherapy. Words cannot describe the emotions I feel for Quinton, Megann, Jade, Lillie and Violet, but my heart goes out to all of them and I admire the strength, grace and courage they have had throughout this journey.

Jade’s parents are both talented artists in Los Angeles, and Jane Chafin of Offramp Gallery generously opened up her space for a benefit for Jade this weekend. Myself, along with several other artists and friends will be participating.

"To help the family, Offramp Gallery is hosting a month-long art sale, with 75 percent of the proceeds going to Jade and her parents. The fundraiser kicks off with a July 17 reception from 2 to 5 p.m. at the gallery, 1702 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena, CA, and will feature the works of more than 50 artists from throughout Southern California and beyond. Musical entertainment will be provided, and guests can perform their favorite karaoke hits for donations of $10." (From Pasadena Weekly)

Congratulations to Harmony + Javier! You may recognize these two from this shoot. They married and celebrated at Portland's own Urban Studio, a cool, contemporary venue in the Pearl. This wedding was bright, lively, handmade (Harmony made all of those endearing paper flowers and other sweet decorations) and full of sunshine, even if it was a rainy Saturday in June. Their invitation promised food, drinks, dancing and ridiculous amounts of joy, and man, did it deliver. I laughed to the point of tears and these two know how to party. Harmony + Javier, it was an absolute joy to document your celebration. Thank you so much for letting me be part of it. Here's to many happy years ahead - I know there will be infectious laughter.

The work is inspired by the diary of Opal Whiteley, which in Hayley’s words, “focuses on her uniquely religious relationship with nature.” In her diary, Opal speaks of "cathedrals" that Hayley describes as “locations in nature that Opal routinely revisits in the text, places where she plays, prays, and performs makeshift rituals.”

Hayley was generous enough to share with me her own “cathedrals” - the sites in her neighborhood of some of her recent paintings. It was so exciting to be in the physical space of her inspiration, breathing more life into the already vital work. This beautiful show comes down June 30th, so please treat yourself and go see this work in the flesh.

Of note, I didn’t realize it until I was editing the film, but I do believe that Hayley’s paintings seeped into my subconscious during the making of some of these photographs. Hayley, thank you for your inspiration, generosity, and for sharing your brilliant work.

Meet John + Angie. There’s a story here – one typical of Portland’s funny ways. A few months ago, my other half, Carl, had been telling a story over dinner about his friend John that he grew up with in Maryland. Following our meal, we headed into Music Millennium and Carl went to ask the guy behind the counter what song was playing. It took him a second, but he stopped and said, “Are you John Gavin?” (I’m omitting a few expletives as it had been 10 years since they had seen each other). With arms outstretched, he replied with a smile and said “Fondelheit” (my husband’s last name). Neither of them knew the other lived in Stumptown, but they picked up right where they left off. I love how people weave in and out of your life at significant times. We soon found out that John was to be married to his adorable little pixie, Angie. We are so happy to have old friends and new friends here in Portland. They gave me the honor of documenting their wedding this coming fall, so we headed out for a few photos together before their big day.

Now, John enjoys getting his picture taken about as much as he enjoys a root canal, but he adores his girl, and you do crazy things for love. We headed out for an adventure in Oregon, got derailed, and found this lovely little patch of yellow to enjoy. John, thanks for coming along for the ride and for being such a handsome, good sport. Secretly, despite the grumbling, I think you may have had a teeny bit of fun? Angie, you were a sun-kissed beauty and so cute that I want to put you in my pocket. To both of you, thank you for your trust in me, and I can’t wait for you to be married by September.

Tiffany and I have been friends since we were She-ra and Supergirl.

When you grow up with someone and share so much history, it is pretty incredible to be celebrating her wedding. And, to know that your childhood friend has found a stellar best friend to marry – one who takes such good care and brings about a peaceful happiness and joy is quite beautiful to witness. When I got married, our dear friend, Jill, who just so happens to be a fantastic photographer, took us aside for a few portraits the day before we said I do. She later made us a sweet little book of the evening and it is something we hold dear. I wanted to do the same for these two, so I snuck them away for a few minutes before the festivities begun for some quiet time together. The day before the wedding is not always documented, but it’s quite a special evening. An intimate gathering welcoming friends and family, known for a bit of roasting, embarrassing childhood photos, the famous stories retold, laughter, happy tears and heartfelt words – that deserves to be captured on film. Please enjoy a few portraits below. Tiffany and Peter, I send you all my love and hope your book brings you happy memories. Congratulations you two.

Congratulations to Tess + Adam. You may recognize these two from their engagement shoot. These lovebirds chose to exchange their vows with a lovely backyard ceremony. It was sweet, intimate, fun and heartfelt, and I’m so glad I could be a part of it. I said this at their engagement shoot, and I’ll say it again – I love to witness the friendship and love that exists between these two. And, I just adore how much they laugh together. Life takes unexpected turns and has the power to be incredibly upliftingor conversely, rock you to your core, leaving you in a challenging haze. Two of my favorite things about being a photographer is one, the people I get to meet and two, the wide range of experiences I wouldn’t otherwise have if it weren’t for my camera in hand. From new life, to roaming the streets at night, from weddings to well, wrestling. That’s right – wrestling. For those of you who know me well, you know that wrestling is not my preferred cup of tea. But, when the man you love is chasing down a dream, you take his hand and jump in, even if that water is teeming with sweaty men in spandex, the permeating smell of smoke and fried food, and a crowd of hecklers. (Not my top pick for Saturday date night).

For the past two years, I’ve learned a lot about wrestling – as my husband, Carl, has been working on a documentary titled One Fall. And to my own surprise, during my first experience at a match, found myself getting out of my steel folding chair and cheering them on. Maybe, just maybe, I even heckled a bit. And I must admit – the dance background in me enjoyed the athleticism and choreography during the matches. But, this documentary goes beyond the sport of wrestling. The roots of it describe those who dare to dream. I’ve learned to love these characters, and I think it comes down to what we share – that passion to follow what makes you feel like you are really living. They put themselves out on a ledge – to pursue their loves. That kind of risk is what makes us all feel more full of color – pushing beyond just going through the motions even if it feels uncomfortable at times. There is immense power in embracing that vulnerability.

Carl, along with dear friends and producers, Ann & Russ McGarry (pictured above) and yours truly, all have been working diligently on this project. In jest, I have been labeled craft services, still photographer or public relations. That sounds fancy, doesn’t it? But mainly, I am in the wings as wife and friend, to champion the project that has been held close to the vest – until recently with the help of Kickstarter.

Self-described as “a new way to fund and follow creativity,” Kickstarter has been an incredible resource for us and fellow dreamers. Through this powerhouse, and the amazing support of our friends and family, we have pushed the halfway mark in raising the funds to be able to complete the film. Admirably, Kickstarter has brought the creative community together and miraculously, put projects seemingly out of reach within our fingertips. We are now in our last month to reach our fundraising goal, and are very excited to share more of the project with you. We are asking for your help in spreading the word to anyone that might be interested in contributing to the film. If not for One Fall, please head on over to the site to peruse all of the artists, designers, filmmakers, writers, and creators alike diving in, believing in something that they hold dear. I promise you’ll leave inspired by their endeavors. take better care of ourselves and those around us.

Take a step back. Reflect.

Allow yourself to make mistakes. You are human.

Embrace imperfections - because that is what makes that something or someone unique.

And those flaws - they are quite lovely if you take the time to look.

Hold on to those around you that much tighter.

Enjoy and appreciate that they are there with you during both the beautiful and painful times.

Take the time to notice.

welcome finley fay.

It is an amazing and heartwarming feeling to see friends become parents. There is just something about new parents – seeing their love for their child and also witnessing the deep love and respect that grows for each other through such a sea change. I first met Ronald and Brittany about a year ago when they contacted me about some photos of the two of them together. You may recognize these two lovelies from that shoot. Not long after that, I received the exciting news that their family of two would soon become three, or actually five, including Solo and Millie. We all welcomed their little one on January 8, 2011. Ronald and Brittany asked me to document the day Finley was born, which was a huge honor. Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there to document this important day and felt terribly sorry and disappointed. I was on my way to visit family in Florida and even said to Brittany, “Now don’t you have that baby until I get back.” Brittany laughed it off with an attitude of “that will never happen,” and sure enough, Finley had a mind of her own (I think she gets that from her mama) and decided to make her debut three whole weeks early! I was so sad to not be able to capture this new life on day 1, but am thrilled I could capture this new family weeks later. Ron and Britt, I’m so happy to have met you and it is beautiful to see you as parents. I’m thrilled to meet your little daughter. Finley, welcome to the world sweet girl.

laura + devon: winter wonderland

Congrats to Laura + Devon on their engagement! These two share a love for winter sports and its surroundings, so we headed up to Timberline Lodge for their engagement shoot. As a native Texan, being in this kind of snow had me prancing like a gazelle. I was in absolute awe of the landscape.

With that said, when we got out of the car, we were met with gusty winds and it was blistering, so much so that it knocked me right over. Literally. After a little embarrassment and a few laughs, we all agreed that a bit of warmth and hot chocolate (of course) would solve any problems. Devon couldn’t feel his ears. Some time in the cozy lodge was savored, and we then decided to brave the outdoors. Miraculously, everything had turned calm and incredibly quiet. These two are so sweet together, and we had a lot of fun amongst the snow-capped trees. I was a relieved and thankful photographer that the earlier weather had passed. I think these two lovebirds were happy about that too. Laura + Devon, you were such patient troopers in the snow. Laura, you even wore cute shoes! How did you do it? Thank you for a wonderful afternoon and I can’t wait for your wedding.

Congratulations to Hannah + Brian! Looking like absolute royalty, they said I do at the beautiful and romantic Brasserie Montmartre in SW Portland. What I admire about these two is their lust for life. They enjoy it to the fullest, share that joy with friends and family, and most of all, you can see that they are best friends and truly enjoy each other. Hannah and Brian, thank you so much for thinking of me to document your wedding celebration. It was fun, festive and loving, and I was honored to be part of it. I enjoyed all of your unique details, cherished family heirlooms and strong, meaningful traditions. Congratulations on your marriage, and may your days ahead be filled with love, laughter, and of course, champagne!

Hello! I have been immersed in a little spring cleaning - ranging from my wardrobe to website. Without a doubt, I am my mother's daughter. For as long as I can remember, she goes into a cleaning and organizing frenzy after the new year. I have definitely adopted that habit. It feels good to start fresh, clear out the clutter, and make room for something new. st. jack: day & night

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a new Clinton neighborhood addition – St. Jack. By day, it is a traditional pâtisserie, and by night, it transforms into a cozy, romantic restaurant & bar. Whether you delight in coffee and croissants or steak frites and a glass of red wine, you’ll want to sit down and stay a while. And while lingering over your cocktail or enjoying good company and conversation, feel free to share the warm, fresh madeleines with a friend. Light and airy with a hint of lemon, they are baked to order and absolutely delicious.

St. Jack is the creation of chef Aaron Barnett, whose passion for French cuisine permeates. It was exciting to watch him in action, thoughtfully and delicately preparing each dish.

Aaron, thank you for thinking of me to capture your beautiful restaurant and pâtisserie, and my sincere congratulations on your new endeavor. What a treat to have you here in Southeast Portland. I can’t wait to come back for some of those heavenly madeleines.

catalyst: jody + matty

The weather is turning cold here in Portland, and before hibernation begins, I feel compelled to reminisce in a sun-drenched evening among dear friends that wasn’t too long ago. Even though this kind of warmth feels decades away, it was October sun, which always seems a little bit sweeter before the gray descends. We headed to The Dalles and enjoyed an evening of friendship, music, beauty and late autumn light surrounded by rolling hills. Shooting in an expansive landscape with big skies is something I absolutely love to do and hold dear.
Late November, I posted a little something about a new project of mine, called cat·a·lyst, where I acknowledge people that have caused some type of change in my life, or perhaps I just want to let you know about these individuals and their artistic talents, share a story, or give thanks. Allow me to introduce two of my own personal catalysts, Jody and Matty. They are creative powerhouses. Jody and Matty immerse themselves in music, and Jody also creates beautiful, vibrant paintings, and Matty some of the most gorgeous pieces out of wood and metal.

My first meeting of these two included them bringing over a collection of homegrown vegetables and a warm welcome to my new neighborhood. This first interaction says a lot about them – they are salt of the earth, engaged in their community, and meet newness with open arms. Since then, they have grown from neighbors to kindred spirits, and perhaps without their knowledge, they have been memorable teachers for me. They have taught me how important it is to get back to the roots of things, the value of togetherness, and how life can be rich with artful experiences, all while helping me find the courage to accept the creative lifestyle that I love to live. These soulful songbirds also remind me that especially during difficult times, the small, simple moments – in nature and with others, can be the most precious.

Forgive me for being long-winded. I guess I had a lot to say about these two. I hope you enjoy the photographs from our evening, celebrating their affection for music, nature, friendship and each other.

hello 2011.

Hello January. Hello 2011. This is one of my favorite times of the year. I feel similarly to how I felt last year in the way that this month brings the promise of possibility, the exhilaration of a fresh start, and the room to immerse ourselves in positive change. I find that I am more courageous and more willing to get out of my comfort zone, which I'd like to sustain for as long as I can. There are several ideas on my list for 2011, including the push to grow professionally and as an individual, making more of my personal work, as well as being a bit more self nurturing. The permeating sense of renewal keeps me moving forward, bird by bird. Happy New Year and here's to 2011 being bright.

A few more things I am keeping in mind at the dawn of the new year:

Look in.

Make confidence my friend.

Acknowledge. Appreciate. Accept.

Give back.

Let go.
